S3 94. Is It Time to Hire a Podcast Coach? Clearing Up Myths and Finding the Right Fit
When is it time to hire a podcast coach?
This question pops up frequently on my social media, and I thought it was time to address it, especially considering the myths and mysteries surrounding the process. Who truly qualifies for a podcast coach, and who doesn't? Do you need a certain number of downloads or all the ‘pieces perfectly in place’ before you pursue coaching? This episode will draw from the questions I often receive on my Instagram DMs and behaviors I've noticed since working closely with podcasters as a podcast producer since 2018.
The insights I'll share also come from my experiences, conversations with industry experts, and a strong focus on women, multilingual individuals, and underrepresented communities in podcasting. Since launching my company in 2020, I’ve worked with podcasters globally, from Australia to South Africa, Sweden, and Mexico, which has provided me with a truly international perspective on the medium. Many strategies have been tested across cultures, so let's dive in:

Debunking Myths About Podcast Coaching
Misconception 1: 'I'm Not Successful Enough to Hire a Coach'
This belief genuinely saddens me. It's common to think that only those with high download numbers, large audiences, or considerable sponsorships benefit from hiring a coach. In reality, coaches can guide you in developing systems, strategies, and even mindset shifts. Personally, I didn't realize how much mindset coaching I'd be doing until I was in the thick of it. I had significant imposter syndrome initially but worked through it with the help of a production client who was an experienced coach herself.
The point is, you decide what success looks like for your podcast, not arbitrary benchmarks or downloads.
Identifying When You Need a Coach
If you find yourself overwhelmed or experiencing analysis paralysis, it might be time for guidance. I've worked with various podcasters, from neurotypical clients who just need answers and are off to implement them, to neurodivergent clients who need ongoing accountability. Understanding these differences helps both me and potential clients determine if our coaching styles align.
Misconception 2: 'I Need a Clear Niche Before Committing to Coaching'
A coach's expertise can help you carve out your niche in ways you might not have realized. Many podcasters are external processors, figuring things out while conversing about them—something a coach can facilitate by asking the right questions. Thus, the real value of coaching lies in the interaction and discovery process.
Advantages of Goal-Oriented Coaching
Not knowing what you don't know can stunt your podcast's growth. Often, podcasters feel they aren't doing "enough," when in fact, they might already be succeeding in their niche. A coach can help set realistic, personalized goals based on your resources and ambitions, bringing clarity and focus to your podcasting journey.
Misconception 3: 'I Need a Clear Goal Before Committing to Coaching'
This is one of the biggest misconceptions holding podcasters back from seeking the help they need. I understand the desire to have everything perfectly mapped out before bringing someone on board. It feels like you should have your vision, strategy, and purpose completely nailed down before you can even think about investing in coaching. But here’s the reality: that’s exactly what coaching is designed to help you with!
A podcast coach isn’t there to polish an already perfect plan—they’re there to help you create one. Clarity doesn’t magically appear overnight, and waiting to have it all figured out often just leaves you stuck and spinning your wheels. I’ve seen this pattern so many times—podcasters holding back because they’re caught up in perfectionism or feeling like they’re not “ready” yet. Truthfully, you can’t strategize in isolation. It takes conversations, feedback, and guidance to untangle your ideas and set practical, achievable goals.
When I work with clients, we often start with an open conversation that uncovers hidden priorities and underlying values they didn’t even know were there. That’s where goal-setting actually begins—by exploring possibilities rather than waiting for an epiphany to strike. Your goals aren’t set in stone from the start; they evolve as you gain insights and confidence.
So, instead of waiting for clarity, allow coaching to be the process that creates clarity. You’re not supposed to have it all figured out before seeking support—often, the breakthrough happens because of the support itself.
Misconception 4: 'I Don't Have It in the Budget Right Now'
Economic realities can't be ignored, but often, this is more a confidence issue than an economic one. Are you confident in your abilities to implement changes from coaching?
Investment in coaching is about equipping yourself with tools for a return on that investment. Sometimes creative solutions exist for making coaching affordable, like leveraging sponsorships or other revenue streams, as I've done with past clients.
Misconception 5: 'I Can Find Everything Online for Free'
Spending countless hours in research may not yield the actionable insights a coach—familiar with your specific circumstances—could provide in a focused session. Hiring a coach helps cut through the clutter, circumventing the analysis paralysis many DIY podcasters face.
The Journey Isn't Meant to be Taken Alone
Podcasting can be a daunting world to navigate alone, particularly given that a mere 8.45% of podcasters reach episode 50. A coach acts as a guide and a cheerleader, streamlining your strategy and propelling you towards sustained success.
If this resonates with you, whether choosing me or another coach, take that step to invest in your passion. Podcasting is a collaborative effort, and having the right support can make all the difference in turning your vision into reality.
