What is Podcasthon?
Launched by French entrepreneurs Jeremie Mani and Yves Delnatte, Podcasthon is an initiative that doesn’t require you to raise funds but rather focuses on generating awareness. The idea is simple: select a nonprofit close to your heart, create a podcast episode, and release it during the week of March 15 to 21. This initiative creates a wave of awareness for nonprofits, leveraging the strong connection between podcasters and their audiences.
Why Should Podcasters Participate in Podcasthon?
As someone who has worked in the nonprofit sector, I understand the challenges of raising both funds and awareness. Podcasthon allows podcasters to use their talent for content creation to support causes without the pressure of fundraising. This is especially appealing to those of us who might not run marathons or organize telethons but have a special talent for story-telling: stories sell and stay with us for years to come.
Best Practices for Your Podcasthon Episode
First, when selecting a nonprofit, consider those within your industry or ones pivotal in your personal journey. Storytelling is a powerful tool, and sharing personal experiences can deepen the connection with your audience.
When creating your episode, it's essential to maintain consistency with your usual style. It shouldn't feel like an advertisement but rather an authentic addition to your content library. Consider featuring interviews with nonprofit founders, team members, or beneficiaries to bring more dimensions to the story.
Formats and Flexibility
Podcasters taking part in Podcasthon have flexibility when choosing their episode format:
Solo episodes provide an opportunity to open up about a more personal side of you that listeners may have never known about,
Interviews can enhance your network connections, provide future collaboration opportunities, and highlight founders, employees, volunteers or even beneficiaries,
Episodes with a special segment allow you to get creative in how you bring the cause into the topic (think talking about Women in Tech and highlighting a nonprofit that creates opportunities for women in STEM)
Bonus episodes allow you to take part in Podcasthon without disrupting your regular content schedule
Repackage an old episode with new data, intro or information (least ideal but an option if you’ve run out of time)
Remember, the goal is not only to inform but to inspire action—whether it’s visiting a website or volunteering.
Promote and Plan Ahead
The months leading up to March allow you to engage your audience in your planning process. Encourage them to suggest nonprofits and share personal stories to foster a more involved community. Remember, March is a prime time for discovering new podcasts, so participating in Podcasthon not only supports a good cause but also enhances your visibility.
Podcasthon provides a unique opportunity to bring positive change while expanding your reach. With the first two editions in French and this being the inaugural English venture, the initiative continues to grow, engaging over 1700 podcasters. To participate, visit podcasthon.org, register, select your nonprofit, and prepare your episode for release.
Leverage the power of your podcast to do good and potentially become part of someone's everyday listening. Join the ranks of enthusiastic podcasters in this global initiative—it's a step towards positive change that you won't regret.
