Checklist: How to be a great Podcast guest

One of the most effective and organic ways to grow your Podcast is to be featured on someone else’s show. As a Podcast guest, you’re provided with a plethora of opportunities to expand your online influence, organically grow your Podcast’s listener base, cement your position as a thought leader, and grow your network. These have strong ROI (Return On Investment) but they will only convert if you use them effectively and wisely.

In this article we’re going to cover the actions that will ensure that you go from a first-time guest, to a returning guest:

  • What to do ahead of the episode

  • Prepping for the episode

  • Best practices during the episode

  • PRINTABLE Checklist

What to do ahead of the episode

  • Ensure invitations don’t sit in your inbox for more than 2 days. The episode could be time-sensitive or the host could be in a rush to secure an expert in a specific topic.

  • Be proactive about mentioning your availability or use a system like Calendly.com that synchs with your personal calendar in real-time. This will simplify the booking process.

  • Offer links to resources, or marketing material (a press kit would be best) to help the host prepare for the interview.

  • Be available for a quick call to discuss details ahead of the episode.

Preparing for the episode

  • Look at the Podcasts’ social media accounts to learn:

    • What type of show you’re getting on.

    • What is expected after the show.

    • What type of promotion is done.

    • What type of reach and interaction happens there (would this even be worth your time?).

  • Go over the topic that you’ll be discussing:

    • This is your opportunity to shine, so do extra research to ensure you sound confident!

    • Rehearse it so that you’re able to touch on all the points in 2/3 of the time that you’ve been given.

    • Prepare a cheat-sheet with bullet points, data or quotes that you may want to reference during the interview.

  • Be prepared on the technical side (for online interviews):

    • An external microphone and a pair of headphones are always better than the computer’s built-ins. Even the headsets that come for free with your smartphone will do a better job than none - why? They’re designed to mute background noise and to improve your voice’s quality.

    • Ensure that your computer is running well and that you’re able to connect to the platform where the interview will be conducted.

    • Always read the prep documents you were sent.

    • Find a good location:

      • A quiet space

      • With good internet speed

      • Well lit

      • A place where no one will interrupt you

    • BONUS POINTS: learn about the host. You’ll make a good impression if you mention a couple of things that show that you’ve done your research.

Best practices during the episode

  • Run an internet speed test (Google provides one for free) and if needed, temporarily disconnect other devices such as Smart TVs and Smart Assistants.

  • Always look presentable, even if you’re booked on an audio-only Podcast.

  • Never be late:

    • This is a very basic rule, that still applies to Podcasting. Being late to an appointment is rude and disrespectful - unless you’re Mariah Carey, then you’re excused. But in all seriousness, being late or cancelling at the last minute is a fast ticket to having your name crossed from the returning guests’ list.

  • Have your equipment connected before you hop on the recording (headphones and microphone).

  • Keep your phone away and on silent.

  • Have your notes at hand.

  • Keep your information such as website, and contact information written down - you never know when you may forget!

  • Keep a glass of water nearby - talking makes us thirsty!

  • Sit in a comfortable position.

  • Don’t be salesy.

  • Listen and provide value.

After the show:

  • Send all the information promptly after the show.

  • BONUS POINTS: Ask the Host what can you do to help promote the episode.
